Profile

Jesse has been mountain guiding and instructing in diverse venues across the country for over 25 years. He is certified by the American Mountain Guides Association as a Rock, Alpine & Ski Guide, and licensed internationally by the IFMGA/UIAGM as an American Mountain Guide.

His career is built on reliable and personable partnership, diligent risk management, a knack for progressive instruction, and intuitive solutions. His resume emphasizes 'all-arounder,' and includes first ascents of rock, ice and mixed routes in the Adirondacks and Alaska Range, and first descents in the St. Elias Range. He graduated from Middlebury College (B.A. Environmental Studies/Biology) in 1994, and started a ‘full-time’ mountain guiding career—with three part-time jobs: a rock & ice climbing instructor in the Adirondacks, a pro ski patroller at Jay Peak in northern Vermont, and a freelance carpenter in between.

When not on Alaskan expeditions, on pilgrimages to Canada or the Alps, or alpine guiding on Mt. Rainer & the Grand Teton, he is in the Adirondacks of New York State. Jesse has spent over two decades in the Northeast, climbing, guiding and skiing 250+ days/year on traditional, multi-pitch rock, ice and mixed routes, and off-piste and backcountry ski tours. Those 10,000+ hours or so are the current foundation of a mature practice that is now based in Salt Lake City, Utah.

He currently works independently in the Wasatch, Adirondacks (and beyond) as an owner/member in the Certified Guides Cooperative. In the Tetons, Wind Rivers, Rockies, and Red Rocks (NV), he works as a registered guest guide with Jackson Hole Mountain Guides.

In addition to mountain guiding, Jesse works in various aspects of industrial safety and fall protection: as an AAA/AAI L3 Avalanche Forecaster, SPRAT L1 Rope Access Technician, OSHA General Industry Competent Person, and Technical Trainer for Petzl America. He is also a primary curriculum developer and qualified trainer for the Climbing Wall Association's Work At Height standard and certification program. (from Cloudsplitter Guides)
